The importance of press freedom, freedom of information, and free speech
Freedom of the press or freedom of the media is the fundamental principle that communication and expression through various media should be considered a right to be exercised freely. Despite the fact that this principle has been an essential part of democracy , there are many threats towards this freedom. Having a free media and the right of free speech gives the people a voice as well as having the ability to freely think for yourself. Without it, corporations and corrupt governments would constantly manipulate the news and/or spread propaganda. At that point, is that even a government? An example of press freedom and freedom of speech being violated is on the 2nd of October 2018, renowned Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi was assassinated inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. He was often critical of the Saudi Government, having worked closely in the inner politics of the government. This posed him as a threat to the Saudi Government, because his opinions were different...
