Were a range of opinions presented?: YES

Was the issue predominately presented positively or negatively?: NEGATIVE

What were some of the opinions provided in the news story?

-        Senator Chandler said her "Save Women's Sports" bill, would clarify that the operation of single-sex sport on the basis of biological sex was not discrimination. She said she did not think it was safe to expect female players to compete against males.

-       Former Tasmanian anti-discrimination commissioner Robin Banks said the bill was "a legislative solution to a non-existent problem."

-       Prime Minister Scott Morrison endorsed it at a press conference in Tasmania on Tuesday.

"It's a terrific bill and I've given her great encouragement," Mr Morrison said.

-       Charlie Burton from Equality Tasmania said the bill "seeks to exclude trans girls and trans women from participating in sports".

"One of our key messages is that Tasmanian women stand shoulder to shoulder with their trans sisters and repudiate attempts to exclude them from women's sports and women's services," Dr Burton said.

What is your opinion on the article? Why?

-        The title clearly suggests that Claire Chandler’s proposal is harmful against women, especially trans women.

-        Throughout the article, the word “save” is quoted a lot in relation to what Senator Chandler wants to do with this proposal. This reads as mocking Clair Chandler and her actions.

-       The article is very upfront with Chandler’s transphobia, as they keep referencing her referring to trans women as men, and has much evidence of how her bill is damaging as well as not being able to name a sports club that is willing to exclude trans women.

-      I find this article entertaining, as it includes issues that I am interested in, and seems to debunk all of Clair Chandler’s points and her wanting to “save” women’s sport.

What is this article about? Why is it in the media:

-        The article is about Bridget Archer condemns fellow government MP’s single-sex sports proposal

Where did you find out about this article? What media organizations did you access:

-        I found out about the article through accessing the Guardian media organization.

Were a range of opinions presented?: YES/NO

Was the issue predominately presented positively or negatively?: POSITIVE

What were some of the opinions provided in the news story?

-        “I support it, as Claire knows,” Morrison told reporters earlier this week. “I think it’s a terrific bill and I’ve given her great encouragement”.

“Claire is a champion for women’s sport and I think she’s been right to raise these issues in the way that she has. Well done, Claire”.

-       Liberal MP Bridget Archer has blasted fellow Tasmanian senator Claire Chandler’s controversial legislation allowing sporting groups to exclude transgender people from single-sex sports as “a vanity bill” and “not government policy”.

-      “This is not government policy – this is a vanity bill,” Archer said.

-       The chief executive of Equality Australia, Anna Brown, said this week sporting groups had been working hard for decades to ensure inclusivity for trans and gender diverse people, saying “sport should be for everyone”.

“In supporting this cruel, divisive and unnecessary bill, the prime minister once again underestimates the community’s support for trans and gender diverse children,” Brown said.

What is your opinion on the article? Why?

-        The title is worded to focus more on the people that are against the bill, however there is only one paragraph that focuses on the backlash and the rest are supportive of the bill. They haven’t listed out the many reasons why this bill could be extremely damaging to a marginalized group. This suggests that the journalist wrote the article with a bias.

-        Overall, the article reads as in support of the proposal. I find the article structured in a way that actually backs Clair Chandler’s bill. By starting with quotes that support the bill, followed by a few lines that were against the issue, then ending with more supportive arguments.
